Dr Apostolos Ilias entered the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, after being successful in his A level National Exams and graduated in 2002.
He completed his compulsory Rural Medical Service in the local Surgery of the village Mavromati and worked at the same period in the Orthopaedic Department of the General Hospital of Livadeia, Greece.
He then entered the Surgical Core Training Programme and worked in the General Surgery Department of the General Hospital “Asklipieio Voulas’’. Afterwards he completed his compulsory Military Service and served the Hellenic Navy as a Deputy Officer Doctor, initially in the Tank Landing Ship (LST) “Chios” and finally moved and worked in the 1st Orthopaedic Department of the Athens Naval Hospital, Greece. He then entered the Specialty Training Programme in Trauma and Orthopaedics and worked for about 4 years in the 2nd Orthopaedic Department of the General Hospital “Asklipieio Voulas”. After being successful in the final Specialty Exams he was awarded the Specialist Diploma in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Greece and entered the GMC Specialist Register in 2012.
Between 2012 and 2017 he worked across the UK as a Specialty Doctor in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. He was a Clinical Fellow in the Trauma and Orthopaedics Department of Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, attached to the Upper Limb firm, gaining valuable experience in Shoulder, Elbow and Hand Surgery. He was then appointed as a Specialist Registrar and worked in the Leeds General Infirmary and the Chapel Allerton Hospital (Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust), improving his surgical skills in elective Shoulder Surgery, elective Knee Surgery and Adult & Paediatric Trauma.
Between 2014 and 2017 he was appointed as a Specialty Doctor in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust. He augmented his surgical skills in elective Hip, Knee, Foot & Ankle, Shoulder & Elbow Surgery and performed regular Adult & Paediatric Trauma Lists.
During his career in the UK he familiarized and gained great experience in modern techniques in Arthroscopic Knee & Shoulder Surgery and Adult Hip, Knee and Shoulder Reconstruction as well. In addition, he has given plenty of lectures and he has trained many junior Orthopaedic Trainees and Medical Students. His portfolio is quite remarkable, he has participated in many courses and conferences across Greece, UK and Europe and he has demonstrated great commitment to Research with great numbers of audits, presentations and publications.
After his repatriation in Athens, Greece he is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in private practice and he has partnership with the Mediterraneo Hospital, the Metropolitan Hospital, the Metropolitan General Hospital and the Athens Medical Group.
